Soil mates : Aquilegia

From The Times, May 12, 2007

How to grow
Aquilegias are very easy to grow from seed.  So easy, in fact, that you¹ll find your garden littered with seedlings in the spring whether you like it or not.  They are happiest in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, but they will happily grow in most situations - even dry soil in shade. Simply dig them up and move them to where they are required.

To avoid unwanted aquilegia plants, remove the flowers promptly as they begin to fade.

To collect the aquilegia seeds, cut the whole stems off the plant while the seed heads are still green and place them upside down in a paper bag. As the seed heads dry out they will release the seed into the bag ready for immediate sowing.

Suppliers: Aquilegias are widely available in garden centres and nurseries. Mail order from: Perryhill Nurseries (01892 770377); Hopley's Plants (01279 842509); Claire Austin Hardy Plants (01939 251173).
