Soil mates : Arum

From The Times, November 17, 2007

Quirky arum’s autumn berries provide a vivid flash of colour that will brighten up any shady spot

As winter deepens and the garden goes into hibernation, the arum produces its trump card: glossy green leaves marbled silver and shaped like a spearhead.

Even better, it flourishes in that awkward dry shade beneath trees and shrubs, carpeting the ground through the winter and into spring.

But it’s this time of year when you get the fireworks: blood-red berries that bring searing colour to autumn gloom.
