Soil mates : Arum

From The Times, November 17, 2007

Lords and Ladies with honesty: Arum italicum ‘Marmoratum’ with Lunaria rediviva
The little red hats of arum dominate the scene in this autumnal planting. Thrusting, leafless stems are topped with clusters of tomato-red berries, drawing the eye as much for their curious habit and texture as for their vivid colour.

The retiring green backdrop of geranium and euphorbia focuses our attention on the peculiar form of the arum, while the silvered tambourines of the honesty lighten an otherwise dark backdrop.

For maximum effect, try planting as a companion to an autumn-berrying tree.
