Soil mates : Bamboo

From The Times, December 29, 2007

With its golden canes and evergreen foliage, crookstem bamboo adds drama to a winter border

A new transparency takes over the garden at this time of year, as plants are stripped bare of foliage. In these quiet months, it’s long been popular to add vertical accents of colour with dogwoods and silver birches, but I am increasingly casting bamboo in this role.

With its evergreen arching foliage and richly coloured canes, bamboo is an elegant presence in the garden throughout the year. And with simple pruning, the strong verticals can have a sculptural beauty that rivals even old favourites.
