Soil mates : Bamboo

From The Times, December 29, 2007

How to grow
This bamboo likes sun or partial shade and moist soil. Its mature height and spread is around 3m.

Although it’s one of the less invasive types of bamboo, I would recommend planting it in a container, or with vertical root barriers to at least 60cm deep.

To show your plant at its best, thin out the weaker canes in May to create a 10cm space between each stem. In July, you should cut back all the lateral shoots on the lowest 50cm of the cane and thin the lateral shoots above.

Suppliers: Bamboo is available nationwide in your local garden centre or by mail order for a wider selection.
