Small courtyard garden design with shady architectural planting, London Docklands UK
The compact garden of this modern property in Londons Docklands was totally overgrown when I first saw it – and hemmed in by other houses.
The brief for the garden designer was to create a clean, modern ‘outdoor room’ for entertaining, with verdant planting, winter colour and real privacy.
The challenge was tocreate a modern courtyard garden that would maximise the use of garden space within our limited budget.
A large raised bed also forms a seating area with a suspended wooden seat. Paving is laid from local stone with granite sett detailing. False walls creates an interplay of textures with the architectural planting.
The fencing is created from the same wooden panels as the seating for continuity.
The planting design focuses on easy maintenance and texture. The shady architectural planting includes large leaves of Rogersia which emerge copper before opening green and maturing red, geraniums form summer carpets of colour and rods of bamboo provide height in combination wih the false walls.
Clean, subtle lighting is key to this contemporary garden design – as it will mainly be used in the evening and at weekends.
