Tranquil contemporary courtyard garden design with Islamic design influences and fragrant planting - Muswell Hill, London
This small London garden was swamped by large shrubs and trees that were out of scale with the compact size of the garden. As part of a total refurbishment of the house, the garden was redesigned as an extension to the house for year round use. Alice Bowe, who was at the time living in London, was comissioned as their contemporary garden designer.
The geometric framework of this modern courtyard garden reflects the architecture and layout of the property, taking into account the views looking out from the kitchen, lounge and upstairs bedrooms - whilst privacy has been created through the introduction of pleached hedging.
Inspired by a fusion of the traditional Moorish gardens of Morocco and the Alhambra, and traditional English garden designs - a balance of sunshine and shade, the gentle sound of water and fragrant planting design make up the backbone of the design. The scheme will also take the path of the sun as its guide – creating 3 distinct areas to make best use of the sunshine at different points of the day. The garden design utilises a simple, vibrant palette of colours and materials.
Functionality and low maintenance remain essential tenants of the courtyard garden design.
Lighting design for the garden is key, so that use of the garden can be extended into the evening and the mood of the space changed at the flick of a switch.
